For a UW-Madison course on Public Policy Analysis, I participated in a group project focused on researching the opioid epidemic. We spent a semester researching the crisis, specifically focusing on its impact on rural areas and the lack of funding for treatment and community health centers. Our fina assessment presents and analysis of the crisis, three policy options, and the pros and cons of each.

Our three policy alternatives were as follows:

  1. Creating new guidelines for pain medication prescription

  2. Increased funding for community health centers

  3. Expansion of medication-assisted treatment under BadgerCare

After weighing the options, our final recommendation was Alternative 2: increased funding for community health centers.
